A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF BUSINESS, EFFICIENCY, SOUNDNESS AND PRODUCTIVITY OF NEW PRIVATE SECTOR BANKS

Abstract

The paper is an attempt to analyze business, efficiency, soundness and productivity of NPSBs with the help of objective method of ranking. The method has been applied to determine ranks of the NPSBs during 2000-01 and 1999-2000. This study covers 8 NPSBs (ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, UTI Bank, GT Bank, IndusInd Bank, Centurion Bank, IDBI Bank and BOP Ltd.). Four aspects of a bank’s performance have been studied: business performance (11 indicators), efficiency performance (14 indicators), safety and soundness performance (6 indicators) and labour productivity performance (6 indicators). In all 37 indicators have been studied. According to the study results, during 1999-2000, overall, Global Trust Bank emerged as the topmost bank, (among NPSBs), followed by IndusInd Bank and HDFC Bank Ltd, in succession. In business performance, HDFC Bank was the topmost bank, followed by Global Trust Bank and ICICI Bank, in succession. In terms of efficiency, Global Trust Bank was the topmost bank, followed by HDFC Bank and IDBI Bank, in succession. In terms of safety and soundness, IndusInd Bank was the topmost bank, followed by ICICI Bank and Global Trust Bank, in succession. In terms of labour productivity, IndusInd Bank was the topmost Bank, followed by Global Trust Bank and IDBI Bank, in succession. But during 2000-2001 the picture changed for few banks.
