Abstract

In this work, we studied the degradation processes of two grades of polypropylene (isotactic
and block copolymer of propylene with ethylene) and the formation of their nanocomposites.
Degradation occurred in different temperature profiles 170,180,190 and 200°C.
Polypropylene/clay composites, in the presence of functionalized polypropylene, were obtained
and their relationship with elastic-strength characteristics were studied. For isotactic
polypropylene, it was found that functionalized polypropylene can improve module of elasticity
due to the formation of exfoliated and intercalated nanostructure. Furthermore, functionalized
block copolymer of propylene with ethylene also contributes the increase in module of elasticity
and the decrease of elongation at break of block copolymer of propylene with ethylene/clay
composites.
