INVESTIGATIONS ON MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF B4C AND GRAPHITE PARTICLES REINFORCED AL2117 ALLOY HYBRID METAL COMPOSITES

Abstract

In the present Investigation an attempt is made to develop and study the microstructural and
mechanical properties of Al2117 hybrid metal composites. Al2117 alloy is used as the matrix
material and B4C and graphite particulates are used as the reinforcement. B4C contributes high
stiffness and hardness and Graphite contributes smooth machining property and acts as a solid
lubricant. Stir casting technique is employed due to its easy setup, low cost, uniform dispersion
of reinforcement. MMC is obtained by incorporating B4C in varying % i.e., 3% and 6wt% and
5wt% of graphite is kept as constant. Microstructural study shows that the K2TiF6 increases the wettability of B4C particulates in the liquefied matrix and forms strong matrix reinforcement
interface. From SEM analysis uniform spreading of B4C and Graphite particles along the
aluminum matrix is observed. The hardness of the aluminum matrix increased with addition of
3% B4C-5% Graphite particulates and 6% B4C-5% Graphite particulates by 3.1 % and 10.41%
respectively. The ultimate tensile strength of the Al 2117 matrix increased by 4.06% and 9.6%
with the addition of 3% B4C-5% Graphite particulates and 6% B4C-5% Graphite particulates.
