Abstract

Madura Island as one of centers for cattle production in Indonesia has great potential to be developed. Madura cattle or Madurese cattle are one of the original Indonesian cattle breeds that need to be developed and conserved. Low ownership, poor management, and the complex marketing of Madura cattle become challenges in the development of the cattle. This study uses a value chain analysis approach in order to analyze the management of value chain structure in Madura cattle agribusiness and to analyze the value chain upgrading status of it. The study results indicated that the ownership of Madura cattle breeders is still low, the motivation for breeding the cattle is for investment purpose, and the cattle are traditionally raised. There are many actors who are involved in the marketing process of Madura cattle’s value chain. Purchasing cattle without a clear standard regarding cattle quality causes a weak bargaining position for the breeders. This study recommends that there there must be a counseling given to change breeder’s mindset to be more business-oriented. Upgrading is needed in many areas, especially in process, products, and functional sector of the Madura cattle’s value chain.
